Have you always wished you could sing along to the songs you’re learning on guitar? Maybe you have dreams of singing songs with your grandchildren or with your friends at the campfire. Or you’d love to play a song or two at an open mic. Or a family member asked you to perform a song at their wedding reception.
Singing and playing guitar at the same time opens up tons of opportunities to play your guitar more often. But you might be thinking… Learning guitar is hard enough, how am I supposed to tackle singing too?
The good news is that you CAN learn to sing and play guitar at the same time. We are just now starting to offer private singing lessons on the Guitar Fam site, but here are 8 tips to get you started right now. We go much more in depth in the video above, but in summary:
1 - Practice the singing and guitar playing separately at first.
2 - Make things easier by humming first.
3 - Simplify the guitar parts when you have to.
4 - Don’t match your singing syllables to your strumming.
5 - Observe where the strumming lines up with specific syllables.
6 - Use a metronome to work the song up to full speed.
7 - Record yourself.
8 - Start playing!
A word of encouragement: The first song is the hardest. As you improve both your vocal technique and your guitar technique you’ll find that with time, you’re able to do progressively more advanced strumming patterns while singing.
If you need help with your singing technique, I'd love to help you! Head to GuitarFam.com/singinglessons to learn more and book your first complimentary lesson.
I will help you discover and develop your unique singing voice so you can perform the songs you love with confidence. Feel free to reach out to us at support@guitarfam.com if you have any questions.
Wishing you all the best with your musical goals!
